Attack of the Lensbaby

After all this talk of gear I figured I should post at least one picture. My friend Jameka sent me home with a Lensbaby, a funky little lens that lets you move it like a bellows camera, completely messing with the focal plane. Here’s what I shot:

Yeah, I know not terribly exciting. Unfortunately I don’t [...]

And they solved my biggest bitch, namely that they now generate a full-size preview for Adobe DNG files. Why do I care? Well, DNG is designed to cary metadata in it…meaning that I can convert my RAW files on import (imbedding the original RAW, of course) and then have the metadata follow the image through [...]

Trading up

Today I traded up my mid-range telephoto, moving from a 70-300 f/4-5.6 to an 80-200 f/2.8. The “why” of this decision is pretty simple: at the shorter focal length I gained a stop, at the far end, two. For a guy who pretty much insists on shooting with natural light this is a huge, huge [...]

A tip for RAW shooters

Up until this weekend I had been using Adobe’s Camera Raw conversion to take my Nikon NEF files and bring them into Photoshop CS2. No more! After doing some experimenting I discovered that the Nikon Raw plugin for Photoshop does a much better job of getting the colors right. It takes a bit longer but [...]

I flew over the holiday. I have come to hate commercial air travel. Full set here.

A real photo-jounalist

I was simply blown away by Emilio Morenatti’s site. It really is worth a look. n.b.: You have to click on the word Afghanistan to get into the galery.

This is the first upload from my film scanning nightmare. My little brother & sister from 20 years ago or so. I still need to do a little dust & scratches clean up, but I’m glad I’ve at least got them into the computer. They’re still my favorite portraits.

Film scanner hell

So I’ve been scanning in some old negatives for the past three hours. With that amount of time you’d think I’d have done lots of rolls…but, no. Instead I’ve limped through a single 24 frame roll; and I didn’t even capture all 24 frames. This is more than a little frustrating.

Cold front moving in

I had wanted to catch the moon. I’d seen it on the way home and it was beautiful–big and bright in the sky. Unfortunately, by the time I got home the cold front had started moving in. As I stood out back waiting for the moon to reappear, I could feel the temperature dropping. It [...]

Slightly edited IM conversation:
Sean: that’s a fantastic picture!
bill: of the leaves?
Sean: yeah, you [expletive deleted]
Sean: that’s the shot I’ve been wanting to take for a week!
Sean: a really good fall shot
Sean: god, i hate knowing you
Sorry, it’s a private gallery, so I can’t show it to you. No, really. It is. This is why [...]

New tag line?

I’ve decided that “Because the image matters” is just a wee bit too pretentious. Got an idea? Leave a comment or e-mail me.

A new piece of kit!

After much searching and consideration, I finally decided on a replacement point-and-shoot camera.

This replaces an absolutely horrible Nikon point-n-shoot that I got with credit card points several years ago. That camera is slow, cumbersome, and generally frustration producing.
So far this Casio has proven to be the right size, quick to shoot, and have all the [...]
