Published again!

Yay! Got another publishing notch in the belt. Actually, two in the last month. The first was for the Janesville Gazette in Janesville, WI. That would be the hometown paper for one Tad Kubler, lead guitarist for one of the best bands out there today: The Hold Steady. The best part was that I got [...]

The Big Sleep

You’ve got to love it when a band brings their own lights to a show and then uses them to give you all kinds of cool shadows. These guys opened for The Hold Steady and they were great. So was Nessie. In fact, it was an all around fantastic show.

The Gig

So, almost ten months after my first attempt, I’m going to shoot The Hold Steady again. They’re playing Ybor City tomorrow night and I’m beside myself with anticipation. Mostly because I know the show’s going to be good; the new album is great. Anyway…watch this space for the results

Of the 4 shots used in the Flash display thingy, three are mine. Yes, I know, the shots are uncredited. At this point, I’m not all that worried about it. I mean, they know I took the pictures, and they (or their label) are the most likely source of additional work. The other thing [...]

Why I shoot

I noticed that I had a comment on one of my Hold Steady pics on Flickr the other day. Since they’d been up for nearly a month I was a bit surprised. I checked it out and, well, here it is:
I look at many Hold Steady photos. This one is my very favorite. Galen’s Mom
Who’s [...]

The Hold Steady at Local 506 in Chapel Hill. I’ve got about 300 images to go through from this show. This was in the first 20 or so that downloaded and I like it. It also makes me feel like a photo-stud: 80-200mm zoom, handheld, 1/45 sec. at f/4. Yes, I sign autographs (and if [...]

With the daylight fading on the First Night festivities I made my way down to the main stage where the People’s Procession (apparently someone has a thing for Lenin?) would finish. I figured I’d get some shots as the parade came in. As I approached I heard country music…not a genre I’m not real familiar [...]

Tres Chicas performing at the Ipas Rock for Reproductive Rights show in Carrboro, NC. They were, as usual, great. Got to hear several songs from the new album that’s coming out in March on Yep-Roc.

Man, what an amazing show! This is the first time I’d seen them and they lived up to all their advance billing. They were fantastic: great players, great tunes, and fun as all hell to watch. I think it’s impossible to take a bad picture of Mary Huff. She has the most expressive eyes I’ve [...]

I caught Jimbo Mathus at the Cradle last night. Wow! As a genre, I’m not real keen on electric blues, but this guy is fantastic. If I remember my local band lore correctly, he was part of Squirrel Nut Zippers when they blew up (in a good way). I first caught his solo act at [...]
